Mary Benson is a young Yorkshire lass who has taken London by storm and shows no sign of slowing down. After receiving her national diploma and foundation studies at Leeds College of Arts, Mary completed her BA in Fashion Design at The University of Westminster in 2014. I am astonished at how much Miss Benson has accomplished and she's only just graduated!
Mary's C.V is already stacking up to be a triple pager. She has appeared on the television show ‘Mary Queen of Shops’ alongside Mary Portas, showing her business savvy at only 17 years old. She is associated with designer names such as Alexander McQueen and Richard Nicoll. Rita Ora been snapped wearing Mary's stained glass, art nouveau inspired body con dress with matching jacket at Wireless festival and even fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson is wearing Mary. Holy crap, I can’t even fathom what she will have accomplished by the time she’s 30!
Starting up her own shop ‘Pieces of Eight’ at 18 years old, Mary has gone from strength to strength and had features in huge publications including the Holy Grail and Vogue. Articles are buzzing with insistences that Mary is tipped to be the next big thing at her London Fashion Week debut this month and if the past few years are anything to go by, I’d say they're right! Adding to her list of credentials, Mary started her own label, stating that some of her inspirations are Renaissance paintings, period costumes, Yorkshire and stained glass cathedral windows. Her incredible label features futuristic fabrics, materials and colours, giving her a highly distinctive signature style.
I can't wait to see what's next from this inspirational woman, and it's clear that she's doing northern designers justice. My favourite piece from her collections is, of course, her Yorkshire jacket! If that’s not a proud Leeds lass I don’t know what is.
